Mark Fisher - Artist
MY ARTIST'S STORY
My working career began teaching pottery/ceramics in a secondary school and in evening classes, having spent much of my later school years in the pottery studio and then training at Westminster College, Oxford. A change in career (church ministry) led to my art work being 'occasional' and focussing more on graphic arts and photography. Since retirement in 2019 it is these that have been the focus of my interest and, working from home, I enjoy exploring the world of watercolour, pastel and acrylic painting. You will find examples from each part of my art experience on this website.
ARTIST'S STATEMENT
The subject of my art is what is most important, while technique and the ability to express myself in visual terms is an ongoing, and perhaps endless, journey. I find some of the fundamental questions of life illustrated in the world around - nature, people, daily life - and the creation of my images is, for me, opportunity to reflect on these things and I trust they will prompt reflections in others. The significance of each work is beyond what is simply seen.
Given this, each work is, in a sense, unfinished and the process continues with those who view them.
I think that it is for this reason that I value the sketchiness of working with pastels, although I value that watercolours encourage me towards a greater economy of mark-making.
Having returned to art in retirement I am on a path of discovery that I value sharing.
