An Irish surfer reflecting on her choice of career commented that what appealed to her while ‘catching waves’ was the sense of freedom and of being in tune with a power much greater than yourself. It strikes me that there are a lot of similarities between seeking the Holy Spirit and seeking that rideable wave – using experience and knowledge to get yourself in the right place and having patience enough to await the right movement. To ride the wave is as much about the skill and experience of the surfer as the wave and it must be an exhillarating experience, which is clearly what keeps surfers out there in the cold oceans of the world during all seasons! The surfer also commented on the unpredictability of the sea, but the regularity of them and tides says something different to me.
